IT is India's first sea bridge, it was the longest sea bridge in india and also second longest bridge in india.

Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Mandapam in Mainland of India with Pamban Island in rameshwaram.

A road bridge is also constructed parallel to the rail bridge. The road bridge is also know as Indira Gandhi road bridge.

Details of Bridge

The railway bridge is located 12.5 meters above sea level and 2,065 meters long.

In december 2018 this bridge was damaged and suspended the transportation on the bridge for 3 months. 

German engineer Scherzer designed the central part of the bridge that opens up to allow ferry movement, and the design  is taken from london bridge design. On an average 10 to 20 boats and small ships pass through this bridge every month.

As Indian's first sea bridge, it has also become a tourist attraction by itself as people watch in awe. when the two leaves of the bridge open up and ships let to pass through the bridge.
